30th Anniversary Celebration Open Day

Today’s the day we will be celebrating 30 years since we first opened our doors to the local community. During this period many of you will have seen many changes and improvements to the facilities here and some of you will have enjoyed children’s birthdays parties , group or club events. However we are constantly improving the offerings to our community so please come along and see what’s going on and when. Join us at any point during the day to suit, we’ll be delighted to see you.

Celebrations will last all day commencing with the unveiling of a new plaque. We have some very special guests attending, invited by our Chair Stephen Whittingham including many long-standing members in the community who have been integral to the development of the centre over the years. We follow this with a programme of activities and demonstrations to which everyone in the local community is invited.

All profit generated during the day will be donated to our chosen charity Mind who will have members present.

The programme for the day is as follows:-

Opening our festivities will be the choir of Wentworth primary school. We are delighted to welcome them once more to our special day. They last performed here on our 20th Anniversary with a wonderful ensemble of song hence we are much looking forward to seeing them again.

Maldon Wycke W.I. Will be in the Linton Room kindly serving refreshments for much of the day.

In the main hall some of the user groups who currently use the centre will have presentation boards and representatives there to answer any queries about what they do and when.

There will also be some exciting demonstrations. Kicking off proceedings will be the Martial arts group Bhagua Zhang who will be giving the first display lasting approximately 15 minutes. If you’ve never heard of , or seen this particular martial art in action please don’t miss out.

This will be followed after an interval by Diana Jones, Yoga instructor. She will be demonstrating a Bong bath. So immerse yourself during this demo in relaxation and mindfulness techniques. This will be followed by a Q & A session.

Next we welcome Tai Chi (by Mid Essex Branch Taoist Tai Chi Society of Great Britain ). There will be an explanation of some aspects of Taoist Tai Chi Arts, followed by a demonstration of the practice of Tai Chi, including voluntary involvement of the audience in some simple guided movements.

Later expect a change of scene as we welcome Katy with ‘Little Oliver Twists dog training Academy’. Prepare to be enchanted as we see Katy in her element as a dog trainer.

Finally in the main hall we welcome both the West Maldon Community Centre Badminton Group and Blackwater U3A Table Tennis Groups for demonstrations and the opportunity to give them a try yourself.

Meanwhile in the Jubilee Lounge join Lyn Jefferis who runs ‘Mini First Aid’ who will be giving a 10 minute presentation every hour or so based on her classes. Q &A sessions as required. All ages covered including information on the qualification courses available . Perfect for families and children.

At 7.30pm we conclude the day with a bumper quiz night along with some additional games for fun.

Quiz Night - our first of 2022 8pm start.

Well Xmas is over and it’s time to get into a new year with fresh questions from Kevin our Quizmaster extraordinaire. He’ll certainly get your brain ticking over. Will your team win? Did you spend Xmas cribbing over those songs/ films/ general knowledge questions. Whether you did or not, it really doesn’t matter because Kevin has questions for teams of all levels and they’re always enjoyable.

We currently ask you to prebook your team as we are still limiting the number of teams at quizzes to ensure everyone’s safety. So contact me on deborah@wmcc.org.uk to ensure your team place.

So prepare yourselves for 100 questions covering all sorts ( no not the sweets!) spend a little time thinking about your teams name. Perhaps you want to keep the same one and my team remains ‘ The Underachievers’ for a very good reason. pretty self explanatory really but we have had the odd special moment. Irrespective we enjoy the evening. Because it’s not just any old quiz, it’s one where you bring along your own drinks and nibbles and quite frankly have a really enjoyable evening for not a lot of money. There is also a joker round where you choose to play your joker and double the number of points you achieve.

On that note what do you need to bring?
Team members up to 8 in a team. Pens and perhaps some scrap paper to work out anagrams etc Glasses to drink from, your nibbles and of course the drinks you wish to imbibe.

Entry is just £4 per person over 16s ( under 16s free).
we also sell raffle tickets just £1 a ticket. Purchase when paying for entry.

With two breaks during the quiz to allow for marking of the questions ( and of course the drinking and eating of your goodies) there is ample time to enjoy yourself.

There is a winners prize of 6 bottles of wine for the winning team and a little something for the team scoring the least amount of points. In the event of a tie Kevin will set a tiebreaker question. The closest answer wins.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Don’t forget email Deborah@wmcc.org.uk or tel 07823777201 to book your space. Thankyou.

Quiz Nights are Back!

Finally! Our first Quiz Night of 2021 . Firstly we are delighted to welcome you back, along with Kevin our wonderful quizmaster. We have missed you all.

For our first quiz night we are restricting the number of teams to 8 only. Just to allow us time to get back in the swing of things and to keep everyone as safe as possible with the inevitable rising case numbers.
This does unfortunately mean we need to ask you you to book your team in in advance but I’m sure you will appreciate the reasoning behind it. That said it’s just an email or a phone call/text if that is your preferred method to book.

Once you’ve booked, note the start time and date in your diary, and arrive 15/20 mins beforehand because the quiz questions start promptly at 8PM. Don’t forget you’ll need pens ( and perhaps some scrap paper). Kevin provides you with a team answer sheet, and you’ll have an opportunity to choose one of 10 rounds to play your joker. Use it well because double points are available.

You’ll also need to bring along your own drinks/glasses and nibbles. Just to make the evening more enjoyable.

The cost is just £4 a head for teams of up to 8 people. Under 16’s free as usual. That’s amazing value and it helps raise funds for the centre. That’s needed more than ever now after the past 18 months.

Winning team receives 6 bottles of wine and there’s chocolate for the team with the least points. Never a bad thing.

Raffle prizes as well! ( if you purchase a ticket that is!)

So to book your team email me at Raymentdeb@aol.com or tel/text 07823777201

Hope to hear from you soon.

Quiz Night number 2 of 2020

Well we all survived the first quiz in January and now there’s all to play for. Anyone can win because we never know what devilish line of questioning Kevin our quizmaster will take. So don’t forget first and foremost it’s an evening of fun. Anyone can do it and you don’t have to be Einstein. You’ll be amazed at what knowledge you’ve really stored away over the years and it’s great to work the grey matter occasionally.

So come along, teams of up to 8 people. ( Though the smaller teams usually win probably because there’s less arguing over the answers). Cost is £4 a head (over 16s) and the winning team receives 6 bottles of wine. Team with least points ( there are no losers here) gets consolation chocolate.

Bring along your own drinks, glasses and nibbles to enhance the evening and perhaps even win on the raffle, what’s not to like?

Quiz Night 1st one of 2020 starting at 8 pm.

Tonight sees the 1st of our quizzes for 2020 take place and we welcome back our super quizmaster Kevin Briggs to challenge us over the course of 10 sets of 10 questions. As usual each team of up to 8 people will have a joker to play to double the amount of points earned on one ‘specialist’ round they think they are best at. Watch out for Kevin’s little plays on words though. All is not always as it seems.

Bring along pens and paper ( useful for any number or word rounds) whilst Kevin provides the quizsheets of course, and don’t forget the all important drinks, glasses and nibbles. Of course you’ll need a team name too. We usually have some really good ones and it adds to the fun!

We always hold a raffle during the evening and payment for quiz participation is upon entry at the door for the very reasonable sum of £4 a head. (16 years and older). The winning team will receive 6 bottles of wine and the team with the least points gets some consolation chocolate. Something to sweeten the pain!

So come along and have a thoroughly enjoyable evening with us. You might even learn something. I know I usually do.
